1946 Norton 16H. £5,000

Girder Norton 16H. Currently a project and not ready for sale.

This is a 1946 Norton 16H motorcycle which is a 500cc side valve single. This machine comes with a current V5C and is classed as historic so is tax and MOT exempt at this age. Its on an age related non transferrable number. Matching engine and frame numbers. 1946, so a civilian bike not military.

The story with this  bike is that the previous owner put it together to see what was missing before  restoring it. So in affect this is at dry build stage. If you look closely you will notice new tyres, a new exhaust, a new horn a new seat cover etc etc. These were all bits needed to build it up. He got it to running stage and then could not be bothered to knock it back down to bits to start chroming various bits and painting it. Therefore it is at a bit of a cross roads because plenty of people prefer bikes to be unrestored. This is sort of a half way house, and I know people who would for example, find an old seat cover and an old horn and maybe even an old exhaust system and keep it all original and run it as it is. Others would want to continue with the restoration. That choice will be yours. But of course most of the gathering of bits has already happened and everything you need is right there already. The bike starts and runs and ticks over. It seemed to rev OK, but I noticed a lot of bits of rust coming out of the tank down the fuel lines, so that may well be affecting its running. The lights all work as does the horn. I could not tell if it was charging or not to be fair. To finish it clearly needs a tool box lid, the centre stand fitting ( which is there and strapped to the back of the seat) and of course number plates making up.So, this is an on going project that you could ride as is or restore further. At this period Norton were still using up their supply of girder forks, so a 16H having girders fitted in 1946 is correct. I do have a repro 16H tank available in chrome if you want a new tank and I will offer that to the winner of the bike if they want it.Viewing is welcome. 07718 593259 for viewing.
